CBD 101: Chapter #1 The Most Common CBD Questions, Answered.

CBD 101: Chapter 1

CBD is super popular these days, but with so many terms and products going around, there are still a ton of questions surrounding this extract. With so many questions, it can be difficult to know where to begin understanding CBD.

What is it? What is it made of? How does CBD make you feel, as compared to marijuana?

CBD’s history, source and legality gets confusing quickly, but we’re here to clear the air, in our newest blog series, CBD 101: The Most Common CBD Questions, Answered.

Here are the most frequently asked questions about CBD and the best answers from our Southeast Edible experts.

How Is CBD Different from Marijuana?

Many people confuse the CBD cannabinoids and the marijuana plant because they come from the same cannabis plant species, but the exact substance and effects are different.

There are three recognized species of cannabis plants:

  • Cannabis sativa
  • Cannabis indica
  • Cannabis ruderalis

  • Marijuana is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant species, but you will find the most common cannabinoids, CBD and THC, in the plant as well.

Marijuana contains more amounts of Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, than CBD. THC is what gives cannabis its psychotropic or ‘high’ effect. Unlike THC, CBD is not psychotropic, so it will not give you a ‘high' feeling.

How Does CBD Make You Feel?

Before we get into how CBD can make you feel, we are obligated make the following disclaimer, anything following this disclaimer is based solely on anecdotal third party studies or reports and is not in any way meant to be a health claim by the company and is not supported or verified by the FDA.

CBD benefits tend to increase with more use overtime. This can create longer lasting feelings of calm, peace and balance in the body.

People report at least one of the following positive side effects when they regularly take CBD supplements:

    • Peace and Calmness - People often feel lighter, as if a weight has been lifted off their shoulders, and they feel freer. This sensation is often the result of reduced anxieties and stress.
    • Better Sleep - When taken regularly, most CBD consumers sleep better at night. They find it easier to stop their mind from racing while they fall asleep. Once in dreamland, they find themselves tossing and turning less than before.
    • Increased Focus - CBD can help minimize or even prevent overwhelming feelings and information overload. When you are more focused, it’s easier to get your work done more efficiently without attempting to multitask or becoming distracted quickly.

    Will CBD Make Me Tired?

Whether CBD can make you sleepy, is still open for discussion. Although more research is needed, recent studies have shown CBD can support better sleep.

The anti-anxiety relief brought on by a regular evening CBD routine can be an effective sleep aid.

CBD’s ability to support calm feelings can lead to improved focus and health, whether you’re getting ready for a big day at work, preparing for athletic training or heading for bed.

    Can CBD Help My Anxiety?

CBD is advertised as a holistic alternative to combatting symptoms of anxiety, restlessness, depression, and stress by interacting with the brain's serotonin receptors.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates emotion, anxiety, and mood. In fact, a 2020 study suggests that CBD may help improve depression.

CBD has also been shown to be an effective and natural treatment for high blood pressure.

High blood pressure can also lead to hypertension resulting in more anxiety which can damage your arteries due to the high pressure building inside your body.

Another 2017 study published by the American Society for Clinical Investigation proved that just one dose of CBD can reduce blood pressure in healthy participants.

    Are CBD Edibles Legal?

Its complicated, The farm bill removed the hemp plant from the DEA schedule of controlled substances and gave jurisdiction to the USDA to regulate hemp as a commodity crop. Hemp is defined as the sativa plant with a concentration of less than .03% THC.

The farm bill lets each State regulate the growing, extraction and sale of hemp products. Most states have adopted rules regarding the sale of CBD, with the vast majority allowing some form of CBD usage. Some states allow edibles while others do not. Meanwhile the FDA has taken the position that CBD should not be allowed as a food additive, that position is currently under review.

How Is CBD Incorporated in Foods?

Because it is an oil extract, CBD is very versatile and can be added to almost any food.

The best method is adding it to sweet baked goods.

    Recipes including chocolate
cups, cookies, brownies and peppermint creams, contain strong sweet flavors that mask the bitter taste of the oil.

Infusing oil in food is the way to get the best results by adding it to our favorite treats and snacks. Infusing means keeping the oil low in heat, so that we can add oil to warm ingredients.

We don’t want to treat the CBD oil as a cooking oil and put it over high heat, which would break down the medicinal benefits.
